New Trends in High School Events Demand Top-Notch Entertainment

Why Professional Entertainment at a High School Prom?

Most teenagers are ruled by the word “cool.”   And when it comes to prom, “cool” includes top-notch professional entertainment.  Cut corners on the entertainment, and witness a mass exodus from the prom, as teens look for other nightlife that meets their expectations.  But a professional VJ or DJ, who understands the latest club and music trends, can keep teens on the dance floor and at the prom all night having a great time.

Keeping kids at the prom should be a primary goal for prom organizers:  While at the prom, parents and school officials can be assured that their teens are in a protected environment.  The fears that parents have associated with prom night for decades – drinking, drug use, car accidents, and teen pregnancy – don't typically happen at the prom itself but around it.  Post-prom parties are usually where most of the teen mischief takes place, so organizers are wise to keep students at prom for as long as possible.  A popular DJ makes this happen.

Trends in High School Proms

High school prom is no longer a small-scale event in a high school gym decorated by homemade posters and entertained by a local cover band.  For most high schools in America, the days of the small-scale prom are long gone.  Thanks to Hollywood and a sea change in American youth culture, most high school students expect their proms in large, up-scale venues, complete with professional entertainment.  Fail to meet their expectations, and the high schoolers will create their own entertainment for prom night – a prospect that should make parents and school officials shudder.

DJs at Prom versus a Live Band

Not only are live bands usually more expensive than professional DJs, they also tend to be limited in the range of music they can provide. Professional DJs have their finger on the pulse of the latest music trends of local nightclubs and dance halls, and the music they play matches these trends. But good DJs also have a stunning collection of music, so if the teens at the party want the DJ to change the music style - from contemporary hip hop to 80s retro, for example – the DJ has the flexibility to change the style up without missing a beat.

Concluding Advice

The entertainment at prom makes or breaks the event.  An unsuccessful prom night for organizers might turn into newspaper headlines the next days as teens leave the prom and find themselves in trouble elsewhere.

And live bands are out; rare is the prom that includes a live band these days, and teens know it.  Professional DJs and VJs are in.  Considering that teens and their parents will be spending a small fortune on things like tuxedos, dresses, hair and makeup, limos, and restaurants, doesn't it make sense for prom organizers to make sure the entertainment is also up to expectations for the teens' big night?  Prom organizers shouldn't procrastinate, but should book a reputable VJ / DJ well in advance of the next prom season.

Excellent hub article! Being a prom DJ for years I can tell you and your audience that you're right on the money. Nowadays the rules have changed. For instance, prom DJs are required to have extensive lighting to keep the dance floor appropriately lit at all times. Teens are back into the 'sex on the dance floor' thing, and unfortunately DJs are sometimes help accountable if it does occur. Know your crowd, know the risks, and know the mitigation techniques!
